Started in 1974 in response to redlining and disinvestment, the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition (NWBCCC) is a grassroots, member-led organization. Having organized tens of thousands of tenants struggling around poor housing conditions, evictions, landlord harassment and more, the organization shifted its focus to racial justice and economic democracy in 2012. As a result, NWBCCC developed a proactive strategy to create long term solutions by organizing around community ownership and shared wealth building and incorporating the Bronx Community Land Trust in 2020. CCF’s support will help increase the organization’s capacity to advance three affordable housing projects on land to be put into the Bronx Community Land Trust. Residents living in all the projects will serve on the board of the Bronx Community Land Trust, which has a tripartite structure that includes building tenants, Bronx leadership and technical assistance members. After nearly a decade of organizing, training, learning and testing models for resident control, these projects will move the organization into a new phase of implementation and expansion.
